Imagine this scenario: You have a main artist releasing an album, on track 2 there’s a high profile featured artist and on track 7 there’s another artist involved.
If track 2 turns out to be a hit, that’s great! But should the royalties from that track go to everyone else on the entire album? Maybe, but we’d recommend you to create customized splits per track for scenarios like this.
Here’s how to do it:
- Set up a release like you normally do
- When setting the splits for the release, select which specific tracks these splits should apply to. [Normally all tracks are selected, uncheck the ones you’ll want different splits and participants on]
- After signing and sending that first contract, create contracts for the remaining tracks
(you can find the “add contract” option by clicking the three-dot menu by each track).
- Repeat the above step for each track with different participants/split amounts.
All contracts tied to the release need to be signed by all parties before the label can deliver. However once completed, you’ll have customized royalty splits for each track—perfect for compilation albums!
Here are other scenarios where having multiple contracts with different participants and split amounts makes sense:
- Complication albums
- Releases with multiple different collaborators on each track
- Adding a participant to receive a royalty split for a track with licensed third-party content (like samples) on it
