Does Labelcaster gain ownership of music that it distributes?
No. One entity that does not own and never will own the music is Labelcaster. We serve as a distributor acting on behalf of the labels and their artists.
So what does the License Agreement do?
Artists generally do want to commercialize their work and therefore need to give permission to others, like a record label, to do that. To protect all parties, our system ensures that recordings are properly licensed. Our built-in template license agreement is designed for artists to retain all ownership of their songs and recordings. It grants rights to the Label to distribute recordings to DSPs. It also spells out how royalties will be split between the label and the artists. While it does allow the Label use of name and likeness for marketing purposes, it does not grant any other rights like publishing, neighboring rights, live performance, merchandising, or other mechanical rights. To reiterate, owners never cede ownership of their works.
Of course, labels and artists can opt to use their own agreement with differing terms, which Labelcaster supports. Labels upload them when creating releases. Even then, Labelcaster never has an ownership claim.
